History
Spirit Filled Ministries is an out-growth of a vision from God, experienced by Wayne D. Baker, to begin a new discipleship, outreach ministry, with every member trained and equipped to win souls for Christ. This vision was shared with his wife Rita, who was very supportive, and with others who would become co-laborers and co-founders of the movement. After much prayer, church services were held for the first time on Sunday, November 4, 1984, at the Modern Free Complex, 627 5th Avenue here in Columbus, Georgia.
Realizing that the church must completely rely on the Holy Spirit to accomplish this task, the name Spirit Filled Methodist Church was selected. The church was incorporated as an Independent Methodist Church, using the same pattern as the African Methodist Episcopal Church for Communion, Wesleyan Methodist in doctrine, and Evangelical in preaching and teaching, with emphasis on expounding and sharing the Gospel.
From a beginning of eleven members in 1984, the church would continue to grow and expand its ministry to include an outreach prison ministry, radio ministry, evangelism, and other equipping ministries within the church. As early as 1985, the membership began seeking a permanent place to worship. In 1988, the church purchased a 4.3 acre plot of land on Mulberry Hill. This site has become the home of now Spirit Filled Ministries. We have come this far by faith in God and will continue by the grace of God to be “ The Church on Purpose".
